More than 200 entries wow the crowds in Wycheproof

Wycheproof’s annual races, art and craft exhibition has been hailed a success once again, following a vibrant opening night on Thursday, November 1 at the Shire Hall.

More than 150 people gathered at the Hall to view more than 200 entries and exhibits, as well as a recycled fashion parade by Wycheproof P-12 students and North Central Trade Training Centre textile students.

Special guest Austy Coffey, interviewed by race-caller Rick McIntosh, was warmly received by the crowd as he spoke about his upbringing in Birchip and his highly successful career as a thoroughbred trainer.

The crowd burst into a rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’ as Austy was presented with a cake and Bakery on Broadway “Coffey Card” ahead of his birthday on Friday.

Guests also embraced the opportunity to purchase last-minute Cup Day outfits and accessories from pop-up shops by local retailers Marlbro House, Ultimate Fashion and The Witches Brew.

Wycheproof Community Resource Centre Manager Averyll Loft said it was great to see the hall buzzing with people of all ages and thanked local schools and community members for their support of the event through the submission of high quality artworks each year.

Averyll said the judges had a challenging time deciding on the winners of each category, with an especially high number of entries in the primary section.

“Our theme for 2018 was ‘Spirit of the Country’ and it was really interesting to see how that inspired everyone’s artwork,” she said.

Averyll congratulated all winners once again, including:

Open section: Pasavet Thongthai, Wycheproof: “Spirit of the Country”

Recycled section: Louis Goddard, Wycheproof: “Butchers Wrap”

Photography section: Suzi Thompson, Wycheproof: “Golden Hour”

Secondary section: Charlotte Dowell, Charlton: “Impressionism Inspired Landscape”

Primary section: Demi Mathieson, Wycheproof: “The Ned Kelly Story”

Recycled fashion parade: Eabha Polzin: “The Midnight Milky Way”

The winners of the lucky door competition were Mel Waters and Jamie Ison, taking home a Gelagotis Racing prize pack and a Bag Queen leather handbag respectively.
