Community and clubs support LDAT survey launch

A $100 voucher is up for grabs for those who complete a short online survey aimed at guiding the Wycheproof and Sea Lake Local Alcohol and Drug Team (WaSL – LDAT).

The LDAT is calling on members of community clubs and organisations to complete the survey so that funding can be allocated to relevant areas to improve general health knowledge and, specifically, change community attitudes around alcohol use.

The online survey takes around 3 minutes to complete.

Late in 2017, Wycheproof Community Resource Centre (WCRC) was successful in gaining funding for an LDAT in partnership with Sea Lake Neighbourhood House (SLNH) and support from Sea Lake Nandaly Tigers FN&H Club, Tyrrell College, Wycheproof P-12 College and organisations throughout Wycheproof.

This is a prestigious project funded through an Australian Drug Foundation primary prevention program. The aim of the program is to support communities across Australia to undertake work to minimise drug and alcohol harms.

We know that the science is established with the link between cancer and alcohol and the detriment alcohol has to the brain development of young people. The link between motor vehicle accidents and alcohol is plain and drink driving laws have been in place for many decades.

Despite this, the risk of alcohol harms—including underage drinking and adults drinking to get drunk—is of a great concern in our communities, according to WCRC manager, Averyll Loft and SLNH manager, Kellie Matthews.

The community profile developed to support the grant application shows that the highest risk of alcohol misuse in Buloke Shire is among adults between the age of 25 and 60 years. The local health profile of this age group in our shire is also poor, with higher than State average diagnoses of heart disease, obesity, poor dental health and cancer, they said.

The WaSL—LDAT group has a lot of great ideas to involve the community and first up is to   seek specific direction. The online survey is open from Wednesday 11 April and closes Wednesday 9 May. Everyone who completes the survey will go into the draw to win a $100 voucher to be spent in their community (conditions apply).
