Giddy up and get your entry in for ‘Horseville’

While the Mt Wycheproof Cup Art and Craft Exhibition isn’t going ahead in 2020, locals are being encouraged to get involved with a re-imagined version of the event.

Miniature wooden horse heads are now available for collection from Wycheproof Community Resource Centre (WCRC) to be decorated at home.

Decorated horses are to be returned to WCRC by October 30, along with completed entry forms, to be displayed in the designated ‘Horseville’ on Broadway.

WCRC’s Averyll Loft says Horseville is Wyche’s spin on the ‘Spoonville’ craze that has seen little villages of colourful spoon characters pop up in garden beds and nature strips across the globe during lockdown.

“What we’re aiming to do is to provide a creative opportunity for those who would usually be working on an entry for the Art and Craft Exhibition, and spread a little bit of cheer after such a challenging year by displaying the entries along Broadway,” she said.

This is the first time the Art and Craft Exhibition has been cancelled in its 14 years, and the first time Mt Wycheproof Cup Day has been cancelled since the war years.

Thanks to Children’s Week Victoria, WCRC has been able to purchase materials to ensure all Wycheproof Kindergarten and Wycheproof P-12 students are able to take part in the activity

WCRC is delighted to be one of of the many organisations across Victoria holding free Children's Week activities. With a theme of ‘Children have the right to choose their own friends and safely connect with others’, WCRC aims to celebrate the talents, skills and achievements of our young people.

There are a limited number of horse heads available for community members from WCRC on a first come, first served basis.

“Wycheproof’s very own creative talent Julie Morrison has cut these horse heads individually, and attached each to a stake so they can be displayed,” Averyll said.

“It’s been a huge effort and we are extremely grateful to Julie for helping us bring the Horseville idea to life.”

Averyll also thanked Bec and Shaun, Wycheproof Post Office proprietors, for allowing Horseville to take over their garden beds for the week leading up to what would have been Cup Day and during 2020 Children’s Week.

There are local business vouchers up for grabs for the winners of each category: early years, primary school, secondary school, open & people’s choice award.

“While unfortunately we can’t have our exhibition this year, we are excited to bring the community this creative activity on a smaller, but still very meaningful, scale,” Averyll said.
